One Dish: The Black Sheep on Broadway

Tucked in the Shadows of Growth

At The Black Sheep on Broadway they've intentionally created a place where people gather for live music, conversation, and connection.

As I walk toward my destination, a high-rise crane towers overhead. Construction noises fill the air. A large, much-needed parking garage and a new Marriott hotel are being completed like a 10,000 piece lego set-all of it, a not-so-subtle reminder that Ocala is growing.

Tucked in the shadows of this transformation is a magical place many locals have claimed as their favorite pub. Nestled in the heart of downtown Ocala, just two blocks from the square and located within the historic district, you’ll find The Black Sheep on Broadway at 128 Broadway Street. It’s the kind of place you might miss if you’re focused only on what’s new and shiny, but those who frequent this friendly gastropub understand its staying power.

It’s a cool, rainy afternoon when I step inside. I’m greeted by a friendly face behind the bar as I take in the surroundings. The pub is decorated for the holidays, with colorful lights and garland strung throughout the space. It feels warm and inviting, softly lit-a welcome respite from the commotion of daily life.

Several televisions line the walls, displaying sports, news, and afternoon programming, while music drifts from hidden speakers. A handful of patrons line the bar, perched on high-back barstools. Two garage-style window panes at the front are open, letting in the cool air and gray afternoon light.

It’s easy to imagine you’ve wandered into a cozy British pub.I study the menu and select the seared ahi tuna, described as lightly bronzed and encrusted with sweet, crispy shallots, served with hoisin and a wasabi cucumber aioli. The dish arrives beautifully composed but unpretentious. The crispy shallots impart a gentle sweetness, balanced by the savory depth of the hoisin. The wasabi cucumber aioli brings a cool brightness with just a hint of heat. It’s a dish that feels both elevated and comforting-unexpected for a pub, yet perfectly at home here.

Founded in 2019, The Black Sheep on Broadway is a women-owned, locally operated gastropub that has quickly become a staple of downtown Ocala. During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet both owners,Amy Karp Cannatella and Meigan Sardinia, whose warmth and pride in what they’ve built is obvious.

It is clear that their vision extends beyond serving outstanding food and carefully crafted cocktails. They’ve intentionally created a place where people gather for live music, conversation, and connection. That care extends beyond the walls of the restaurant.

The Black Sheep is deeply committed to giving back, regularly donating 20 percent of sales during select events to local nonprofit organizations. In a time when many businesses are focused solely on survival or expansion, this commitment to philanthropy speaks volumes. It reinforces the idea that community-building doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intention, generosity, and a willingness to invest locally.

As downtown Ocala continues to grow upward and outward, places like The Black Sheep on Broadway serve as important anchors. They remind us that progress isn’t just measured in cranes and concrete, but in connection. In the midst of change, there is comfort in walking into a familiar space, sharing a meal, and feeling that you belong.
