For Stephen Perry, music was never a question of how, but rather when.
For Stephen Perry, music was never a question of how, but rather when. Born in Fort Lauderdale and raised largely in Ocala, he grew up in a household where sound was all around him. His father’s time in the ’80s glam rock band ECHO set the tone, by five years old his first guitar was in his hands, and by middle school the passion had set in.
What began as exposure quickly turned into commitment, deepened by a natural ear for tone and a lifelong encouragement from his parents to sing.
His creative instincts surfaced just as early. Writing poems and essays came naturally, but songwriting offered something more satisfying, a way to articulate what resisted yet transcended the written word.
“Songwriting gave me a certain outlet to express deep feelings that nearly seemed impossible to put into words.” Over time, that pursuit shifted from curiosity to necessity, shaping both his voice and his identity.
Rather than defining his career by a single moment in time, Perry measures it in connection in moments of hearing his work fully realized in the studio for the first time, then witnessing it echoed back by a crowd.
“I think there is something special about to be said about the creative process giving back to you what you have given into it.”
A self-identified “Elder Emo” his influences trace back to the early 2000s emo wave—bands like Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, and Taking Back Sunday (among many others)—whose emotional intensity and sonic presence continue to inform his direction.
Still, Perry remains grounded in the present. Focused less on distant milestones and more on growth, he continues to create with intention, gratitude, and the beautiful understanding that music has already given him more than he ever expected, an incredible life.
