Rerouted by the pandemic but grounded in lifelong performance, Shelby Lauren writes with the kind of honesty that can’t be manufactured.
For Shelby Lauren, the stage was never a distant dream, it was home. Raised in Ocala in a family where karaoke nights were practically tradition, they joke that she was, “singing and dancing” before she could even walk or talk. Training at Madison Street’s performing arts program and later studying voice and guitar at 13, she deepened her craft through work at Ocala Civic Theatre and eventually pursued musical theater in college with plans for a BFA.
Then the world paused.
When the pandemic reshaped her path, Shelby moved home and began gigging in 2021 after meeting local musicians who urged her forward. What could have been a setback became her momentum.
“Funnily enough, I’d always wanted to write but felt I had nothing to say,” she muses. Meeting her now husband just weeks before lockdown changed that. A class assignment sparked the first song she ever wrote, inspired by him, and what followed was “an outpouring of my faith, my love, my grief, my joy, my pain.”
Drawing from Americana voices like The Avett Brothers and Brandi Carlile, and inspired vocally by Ann Wilson and Jewel, Lauren prioritizes authenticity over trends.
With an acoustic EP arriving this spring, she’s stepping forward with songs that feel timeless, personal, and ready to be heard…and yes there will be CDs.
