Roseprimevere: Resilience and Abstraction

ARTIST SEEN PROFILE | NOV. 2025

A social worker and a painter, Magnolia Art Xchange resident artist Roseprimevere is making a splash on canvases and in Ocala.

Main medium(s) you work in:
My main medium is acrylic on canvas. I also experiment with fluid art
(paint pouring).

How long have you been creating art?
I started to paint on canvases in 2017 and did not feel comfortable sharing my art with the world until 2019. To be fair, a wonderful friend, Maria Tusa, gave me no choice, she submitted my work for a group exhibition. I placed third out of eleven participants.

What story are you trying  to tell through your art?
One— You are not alone; we are all trying to figure it all. Meanwhile let us celebrate this moment.

Two— You are already resilient, look inside, tap into your inner strength.

How do you know when a piece is finished?
I do not, lol. I at least know when I have reached my deadline.

Are there recurring themes or symbols in your work?
Indeed, Art of Kwe (art of belief in Haitian Creole), Art of Resilience, is a celebration of stories of resilience, across cultures and generations. Every painting explores the meanings of inner strength, bravery, and courage.

Do you think art can change people? How?
Oh, oui! I am convinced that art can change us, by challenging us to see the world differently. Art diminishes intercultural communication barriers. Most importantly, art improves personal well-being (mentally, emotionally, and sometimes even physically).

What do you believe is the role of an artist in society?
As artists, we create a space where any member of our community is safe to be vulnerable. We ignite the passion to become a better version of ourselves, to create a better community. I hope that my work inspires everyone to look inside and connect with their inner strength.

How has your upbringing or background influenced your art?

I was born and raised in Haiti where art is everywhere — music, dance, poetry, painting etc. Festive colors filled our surroundings. As a result my art is colorful and joyful.

How has living in Marion County influenced your work?
Living in Ocala, has given me the opportunity to paint again after two years of hiatus.

My residency at the Magnolia Art Xchange (MAX) renewed my confidence and inspired me to pursue a career as an artist.

What other art forms influence your work (music, film, literature)?
Over the years, I noticed that music has played a significant role in my decision-making process. During the moments of doubt, there is often a song (mostly heard for the first time) that tips the scale. For example, “Am I wrong “from Nico and Vinz was instrumental in my career as a Trauma Informed Social Worker.

When creating, do you consciously think about your “message,” or let it emerge naturally?
That is quite a puzzling question to answer, I keep an open mind throughout the journey (of creating a painting). At times, a different outcome emerges from my initial vision, and I embrace it fully.
