A Quiet Voice on an Iconic Stage

“She may not seek the spotlight. But she steps into it anyway.”

The Carnegie Hall Experience

In February 2026, sixteen-year-old Avani Josephine Chitumalla stepped onto one of the most prestigious stages in the world as part of the Carnegie Hall Honors Performance Series. For many young performers, reaching Carnegie Hall represents years of structured training and a clear path toward performance. For Avani, the moment carried a different kind of significance—one shaped by growth, resilience, and the quiet decision to step forward despite uncertainty.

Over the past year, her voice has been shaped in the studio at NOMA Recording under the mentorship of Robert “BigBert” Smith through the Student Artist Development Residency, where she was intentionally prepared for opportunities at this level.

Her journey to that stage unfolded over several immersive days in New York City. Upon arrival, students were welcomed and introduced to the program. What followed was a demanding and transformative experience.

Rehearsal and Preparation

The next two days were filled with intensive rehearsals focused on precision, blend, and discipline. Students also attended a Broadway musical, offering inspiration and context for their own performance.

Under the direction of Jeffery Redding, the group was guided through a rigorous preparation process.

Rising to the Moment

For Avani, this environment was both exciting and challenging. Naturally shy, she was pushed into a setting that required confidence and adaptability.

And yet, she rose to meet it.

“What had begun as rehearsals became something more—a moment where preparation, emotion, and courage converged.”

By the final day, the experience culminated in a sound check followed by a matinee performance on the Carnegie Hall stage.

Performance and Connection

Avani’s performance featured a five-song repertoire that reflected both versatility and depth.

The final piece, “Until I Reach My Home,” connected shared experiences of loss between conductor and performer.

Beyond the Stage

Even as she continues to grow as a musician, Avani maintains a strong academic record and plans to pursue a future in medicine. This summer she plans on volunteering with Arts in Medicine in Ocala and at AdventHealth.

Carnegie Hall was not simply a milestone, but a reflection of quiet persistence.
