When most of us think about public libraries, we assume they’re funded entirely by tax dollars and managed solely by local government. In Marion County, however, there’s another essential force quietly working behind the scenes – a network of volunteer-led nonprofit organizations known as the Friends of the Library.

Across the Marion County Public Library System, Friends groups support, assist and advocate for their local branches. Made up entirely of community volunteers, these nonprofits raise supplemental funds, organize events, and champion the library’s role as one of the truly free and accessible public resources left.

Public libraries have long been cornerstones of education, culture and civic life. They provide early literacy programs, homework help, job-search resources, meeting spaces. internet access, and lifelong learning opportunities – all at no cost to patrons.

Friends groups help ensure chose services remain strong, relevant and responsive to local needs. Each Friends organization serves its own branch while contributing to the health of the countywide system. Their efforts often fund programs, supplies and services that full outside standard operating budgets – from children’s reading initiatives and author talks to technology access, furnishings and special publications.

The Friends of che Ocala Public Library, formed in 1980, offer a powerful example of what sustained community support can accomplish. Through book sales, a year-round book market and other fundraising efforts, the group has made significant investments in library programming and facilities.

Over the years, Friends funding has supported children’s and teen ,mission focuses on raising supplemental funds to enhance library resources, services and facilities, while also fostering a sense of shared ownership and pride. Like all Friends organizations in Marion County; The Friends of the Freedom Public Library are entirely volunteer-run, relying on members who programs, staff educational grants, countrywide communications like WORDS magazine, and even major capital improvements, including a $250,000 grant that helped furnish meeting rooms in the Ocala headquarters.
